The Buzz of 2007 is “How do we simplify
our lives?” The Baby boomers are left with an empty nest
of 3,000 sq. feet or more of living space. Quality of life
over quantity suddenly seems appealing. So you decide that
downsizing and looking for a smaller place to enjoy life might
be the answer. Where do you start? Perhaps you are someone
who has decided to sell their home of 30 years and move to
the city. City living is somewhat more expensive, so you would
be sacrificing space to have easy access to theaters, restaurants
and public transportation.
1. Have a plan
In order to achieve your perfect end result, you need to start
by figuring out exactly what it is that you want to accomplish.
2. Discuss what quality of life means to you. Make a
list of what your new place would look like, where it would
be, what you need access to, in essence a picture of how the
rest of your life looks like.
3. Now get ready for a change!
4. Purge….Of course the big issue is STUFF!!!
The kids left behind all their childhood things and furniture
(just in case) and then there is 30 years of accumulation of
tools, furniture, etc. Most of the “stuff” is
probably in the basement or attic, so the first clue is that
you probably don’t even remember what is in those boxes.
This is when “tough love” comes in.
5. What are we keeping?
Does it have a function? Do you love it? Will it fit into your
new space? You might want to start fresh. You might
also want to choose a few items to keep -- the sofa bed,
Ugh!! (But a useful extra spot for guests) the sofa table,
your bed, a few lamps and maybe some favorite artwork.
6. Do a floor plan of your new home.
This will help you be realistic about what will fit and compliment
your new home. The Condo you decide on may suit all of your
needs with the exception of space. These days, living
rooms are often good size with lots of windows and high ceilings.
7. Create a collage
Starting with samples or pictures of what you have. Create
a collage of paint choices, fabric, accessories and furniture.
Your perfect living space could begin with a new slipcover.
Take a sample of the slipcover with you everywhere. One day
you could find a pillow and think, “WOW! What can we
do with this?”
Just imagine the possibilities when you are looking to downsize
and don’t be deterred by what appears to be limitations.
Have a dream and go out there and make it come true. In the
next issue we will use the pieces of furniture that you might
decide to keep and create a perfect space. In this 12x22 Living
room you’ll see how to create a working space, TV area,
Dining area and a cozy seating area. Tune in to see the possibilities!!!
